Cooktop Cove: 10 surprising but brilliant ways to use vinegar in the kitchen
By Angela Brown
It's no trade secret that vinegar is a wonder for a million household tasks. From killing weeds in the garden to whitening up the laundry, vinegar provides a natural solution to everyday problems. Used straight-up or diluted in water, vinegar is safe for kids and pets too.
There are so many uses for vinegar around the house we thought we'd narrow our focus to just the kitchen. Check out these 10 ways you can use vinegar in the kitchen:
1. Save your eggs
The next time you boil eggs, put a tablespoon of vinegar in the water. If your eggs crack, the vinegar will prevent the egg white from leaking into the water. (The vinegar coagulates the egg whites).
2. Clean your kitchen blinds
Slip on a cotton glove, dip the fingers in a mixture of white vinegar and water, then wipe the dirt and dust away from thinner blind slats.
3. Unclog your drains
Reader's Digest recommends using a funnel to pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into your drain. Then use the funnel to add 1 cup of vinegar. The well-known chemical reaction clears blockages and removes odors. Once the fizz stops bubbling, rinse with hot tap water and rinse again with cold tap water a few minutes later.
4. Replace buttermilk
If your recipe calls for buttermilk and you're fresh out, add one tablespoon of vinegar to 8 ounces of plain milk. Let it stand for a few minutes before adding the amount needed to your recipe, How Stuff Works says.
5. Kill odors
Remove greasy odors from the kitchen by filling a small saucepan with water and a little bit of vinegar. Bring the water to a boil and let the mixture simmer until the water is almost gone.
6. Say no to grease stains
It can be tough to remove grease from hard surfaces. To make it easier, wet a washcloth with a mixture of vinegar and water and wipe the grease away.
7. Get more mayo
Scraping the bottle of the mayo jar to finish your sandwich? Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the jar and swish around to get the rest of the mayo off the bottom of the jar.
8. Give your dishwashing soap extra cleaning power
Add a few tablespoons of white vinegar into your liquid dishwashing detergent and shake. The vinegar will help your dishwashing soap remove grease better, plus you'll save money by using less soap
9. Make your pans non-stick
According to Reader's Digest, if you boil 2 cups of vinegar in a greasy pan for about 10 minutes, not only will the solution remove the grease, it also makes your pan more non-stick. You'll need to repeat the process every few months.
10. Clean your sponges
Give your sponges a thorough clean by placing them in a bowl (or the sink) and adding just enough water to cover the sponges. Add 1/4 of distilled vinegar and let them soak overnight, according to Andrea Romano.
